ASTYM in Abilene
You rested it, you iced it, you waited it out, and the tendon still hurts every time you use it.

What is ASTYM?
ASTYM is an instrument-assisted soft tissue treatment that does something rest cannot. It stimulates your body to resorb scar tissue and to regenerate tendon tissue that has degenerated. That distinction matters more than it sounds. A tendon that has been sore for months is usually not inflamed anymore. The collagen inside it has broken down and never rebuilt properly, which is exactly why anti-inflammatories stopped helping and why waiting it out changed nothing. During treatment your therapist runs specially designed instruments along the skin over the affected tissue. The controlled pressure locates the abnormal, restricted tissue and signals the healing cells in that area to go back to work. Scar that was laid down badly gets broken down and cleared, and healthier, better aligned tissue gets built in its place. ASTYM is a certified system rather than a general technique, and Dr. Adam Burns, Tonya Mills and Angie Hoerner are all ASTYM certified here.
ASTYM is never done on its own. The instrument work opens a window, and the stretching and strengthening that follow in the same visit are what tell the new tissue how to lay itself down. Skip that half and the tissue rebuilds in the same disorganised pattern it was already in. That is why your therapist has you moving right after, and why you keep using the arm or the leg between visits instead of protecting it. It is also why you are one on one with your therapist start to finish here, not handed to an aide or shared across a gym floor.
Who it's for.
ASTYM is for the injuries that stopped responding. Not the fresh sprain healing on schedule, but the tendon, the scar, or the stiff post-surgical area that has been the same for months no matter what you tried.
Tendon pain that keeps coming back
Tennis elbow, Achilles pain, plantar fasciitis, patellar tendon pain. You rest it, it settles, you go back to normal, it returns within a week. ASTYM targets the degenerated tissue itself instead of chasing inflammation that is no longer there, so the tendon can rebuild rather than relapse every time you load it.
Scar tissue and surgical restriction
After a repair, a replacement, or a bad tear, scar tissue can bind down everything around it and put a hard ceiling on your range. ASTYM helps your body resorb that scar so the tissue underneath can glide again, which often unlocks motion that stretching alone had stopped improving.
Chronic tightness that always returns
You roll it, stretch it, get it worked on, and it is tight again by morning. When the tissue is restricted rather than simply short, releasing it briefly will never hold. ASTYM addresses the restriction so the length you gain finally has a reason to stay.
What to expect in a session.
There is very little mystery to an ASTYM visit. You will know what your therapist is treating, what they can feel, and what you are responsible for between visits.
Finding the tissue
Your therapist tests your motion and strength, then passes the instruments over the area. Restricted tissue feels different under an instrument than healthy tissue does, so the assessment and the treatment happen in the same pass. Most people can feel the gritty spots being found. Nothing here is treated on guesswork.
Treatment along the tissue
The instruments are drawn along the skin over the affected tendon or scar with controlled pressure. It is firm, and over a genuinely irritated area it can be uncomfortable for the moment it takes to cross. Say what you feel as you feel it, because the pressure is set by your response, not by a protocol.
Load it before you leave
Immediately after the instrument work you stretch and strengthen the same tissue. This is the part that decides how the new tissue is built, so it is neither optional nor filler. You leave with a short home program for the days between visits, and we re-measure your motion as we go and tell you honestly what it shows.
Mild redness or small bruising along the treated area is common and usually settles within a few days. Keep using the arm or the leg normally in between, because the tissue rebuilds around the demands you put on it. If you take blood thinners, have an open area over the site, or are managing a condition that affects healing, tell your therapist first. We screen you and we will say plainly if ASTYM is not the right fit for you.
